| The Binnenhof is a large complex of buildings in the centre of The Hague. It started as a hunting lodge for the Counts of Holland and it grew gradually into a castle. In later centuries, the statholders, princes and rulers of The Netherlands added many palaces and government buildings to the Binnenhof. |

Now, the building is mainly used for governmental purposes. It houses the cabinet of the prime minister, the senate and a part of the State Council. Also, it is still used by royalty for receptions and ceremonies. The highlight of the year is Princes' Day. Then the queen gives the speech from the throne in the Hall of Knights, one of the oldest and certainly the most dominant part of the castle. |
